Chapter Twenty-Two

AFTER STOPPING at a small corner store, Ryan parked the rental car a block away from what he believed was an ACRO safe house, and he and Coco hoofed it the rest of the way. As they neared the gated residence, he grabbed her hand and told her to walk leisurely, as if they were a couple on a stroll.

“There are probably cameras on the surrounding area,” he explained. “Smile and pretend you're happy.”

“Oh, I don't have to pretend,” she said, and yeah, her sarcasm was duly noted.

“You didn't have to come.”

“You need me.”

That was probably true, but he didn't want to admit it. “Okay, so how do you plan to get us in?”

She tapped her laptop bag slung over her shoulder. “I need to find the nearest utility trunk.”

He scanned the area, saw a grate in the grass a few yards beyond the far corner of the property. They'd be vulnerable while Coco worked, but there was no help for that. They'd need to hurry.

Ryan placed himself between the ACRO house and Coco as she kneeled next to the grate and opened it. He dug out the pack of cigarettes he'd bought at the store and lit one, doing his best not to cough. He wasn't a smoker, but he'd anticipated needing to play casual, so he stood there like he'd taken a much needed smoke break. Hopefully Coco was hidden well enough behind him, because if not, she was going to look really fucking suspicious.

After a few minutes, her curse startled him. He didn't think he'd ever heard her utter a harsh word.

“What is it?” He risked a glance back at her, saw her sitting on her heels, laptop balanced on her legs, a wire running from it into the grate, where it was no doubt plugged into an electric wire.

“These people have a top-notch security system. I've never seen anything like it.”

“ACRO would have the very best,” he muttered.

She cursed again. “I can get in, but they've installed a couple of backup measures.”

“Like what?” he asked, though he was still amazed by the fact that she could get in at all. He'd had his doubts, had been running through alternate break-in-to-the-house scenarios in his head, but damn, she knew her shit.

“There's a broken relay between the cameras and the main control panel. It requires manual manipulation at the source to alter any settings. I might be able to get around it, but that would take hours.”

Ryan threw down his cigarette butt and ground it into the dirt with the heel of his boot and then squatted next to her. She was so hot sitting there, her fingers flying over the keyboard, her intense expression what he'd expect from her during sex.

He mentally kicked his mind out of the gutter and put his hand on the computer.

“What are you doing?”

“I'm mildly electrokinetic. I can manipulate some electronic devices. I might be able to…” He trailed off as he let his mind travel through the circuits and electronic pathways until he found the gap Coco had been talking about.
